If you are a fan of extreme, progressive, technical death metal done well, look no further.
With the drums and guitars so tight on this recording, you are left wondering how these four guys even play live shows. The recording is top notch, with every instrument accounted for. I have never heard a death metal band like this and I can gurantee any listener to be completely amazed with this album. While the songs are not quite melodic, the satisfaction comes from the pure technicality of it all.
Overall, I cannot stress how amazinly talented these four musicians are. I myself wonder how the singer is able to play the guitar and growl at the same time. If you have already heard the free mp3s, I'm sure you would be left wondering the same. Pure brilliance!

the above reviewer is correct on all fronts except for one. everything on this album was done by one man, not four. muhammed suicemez handled all guitar tracks, bass tracks (with a few extra tracks by another musician), and programmed the drums himself. that's right, the drums are fake, but believe me, you won't be able to tell. |

The above arguing aside, this album is beautifully complex and bereft with technical madness. Muhammed Suicmez (chief composer of Necrophagist) handles this album in true Death Metal fashion. At the time of this album's creation, he was the only member (bass, programmed drums, guitar, vocals), which should only add to the amazement and admiration of the Turk's musicianship.
Epitaph, the next album, saw Necrophagist recording with a full human band, yet displaying the same technical maelstrom in the previous outing. With melodic guitar work beautifully laid in throughout the album (like in personal favorite, opener "Stabwound"), it would sure seem as if the second coming of Chuck Schuldiner had already manifested itself within Muhammed.
There's no reason for an extreme Metal fanatic to deny Necrophagist, lest he/she not be intelligent enough to appreciate technique (no matter how complex and thorough). With the many redundant and childish Death/Gore releases that continue to make Death Metal a dumber subgenre (Mortician), aside from some exceptions (Gorerotted), Necrophagist makes a separate league for of Death Metal: intelligent Death Metal.
Either you're smart enough to appreciate it or you're not. Simple as that.
