MetalBite Review by Chris on 1/6/2005
Let’s get something out in the open right now: writing about symphonic black metal almost automatically brings references to bands like Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth, but although comparisons of Anorexia Nervosa to those two bands hold true, there’s much more to these five French metalheads than can be expressed by simply identifying them as another clone.

Foremost, Redemption Process is focused on delivering an uncompromised black metal attack while bringing energy that is too often missing in modern black metal. All seven tracks are full of sheer aggression and pummeling guitar riffs with a great touch of melody and memorable choruses. Tracks like “Codex Veritas,” or the painfully catchy “Sister September,” will stay in your head for days and drive crowds crazy during live shows. The orchestral elements handled by Mr. Xort are not overused nor do they take a primary role in the songs. More of an atmosphere builder, it only adds the feeling of intensity and explosiveness. Add to that the inhuman screams of Mr. Hreidmarr and Redemption Process smokes its more popular competitors.

Anorexia Nervosa will not break any new grounds with Redemption Process but it will definitely establish them as one of the European leaders in symphonic black metal. From songwriting to production all aspects of this record are taken to the highest level and if there are any flaws they are not worth mentioning or are hardly noticeable.

I can’t imagine anyone enjoying symphonic black metal and not heaving this record. And even though Redemption Process is far from being ‘true’ black metal I’ll even take the risk and recommend this disc to more diehard fans of the genre beccause what they’ll find here is colder and more extreme than most offerings by those ‘kult’ bands. Anorexia Nervosa created one of the best black albums of the year, this is essential.
