MetalBite Review by Luka on 8/4/2001
The band that many love and just as many hate. The closed-minded fools who call themselves fans of "true Black Metal" and consider C.o.F garbage are quick to brand you a "poser" if you admit you like this band. But, in truth, -they- are the real posers and most fans of C.o.F I know are smart, independent people who simply listen to what they like and donít give a damn what true Black Metal try-hards have to say about it.

Now, the quality of the music is a different matter. This is my first introduction to the band, and my first impression of their sound was amusement mixed with scorn and boredom. I praise them for having a sound all of their own (along with Dimmu Borgir) but it is a style that takes a bit of getting used to. As you surely already know, synths dominate this album throughout. Spooky, eerie, Halloween-y, and sometimes cheesy sound effects are everywhere, louder in the production, in fact, even than the guitars! Thatís a minus in my book right away. Talented musicians should not need artificial sounds to create feeling. But these Britís really know where and when to use them and the results are often excellent, especially when they strike that rare, unique bond with all the other instruments. That is the part that sums up my "amused" reaction.

While weíre on the subject of the good stuff, the best songs (and they truly are amazing, epic songs) are: 'Heaven Torn Asunder', 'A Gothic Romance...', 'Malice Through the Looking Glass', and 'Haunted Shores'.

Now for the bad stuff, and there is more than enough of it both in the good tracks and bad. First of all, Dani: OUT! His are positively the most annoying, god-awful, cat-being-raped-by-a-horse shriek-vocals I have ever heard in my life! Damn you for ruining the music so! And nobody from the band seems to realize how stupid they sound either, there is so many lyrics here; 50 lines per song on average! To go through that much Dani-vocals is almost unbearable.

Another bad thing, the keyboard is louder in the production than the damn guitars! Wait, I already said that. Well, it seems that Dani is what brings this band down so much, get rid of him (well I donít think they can because heís the leader, but who cares) and youíll have a good band. Either way, Cradle of Filth have struck a chord with thousands of metal fans out there and are the most popular "black metal" band in the world. Hmm... must be those outrageous shirts that show naked vampires and dead women...

Bottom Line: Good, not great. Dani really really sucks, please leave the band.
