Review by Adam M on April 29, 2025.

This album features a folk vibe and is the only album in the band’s discography of this type. It is a gentle entry in the band’s cata;ogue that has a singular type of feeling to it. This is a quiet introspective sort of disc that has memorable moments on it most of which appear near the beginning of the disc. There is a feeling that is different than Perdition City, for example, which is more electronic in nature.

The musicianship of the album is quite solid with gentle guitars forming the backdrop of the music. The singing is displaying one of the vocalist’s stronger efforts. All in all, this is a well-performed and reasonably produced platter of music. It is not as gleaming as their more electronic efforts, but has a gentle nature that is wonderful to behold.

This music still not the most well-conceived album in the band’s discography. It is lacking some bombastic element and a bit dry. Those looking for a pretty recording will find a lot to like here, however. This is a peaceful and relaxing type of effort that fits nicely in with the other discs and has a singular beauty to it. It is enchanting and pretty to listen to.

Kveldssanger is an essential Ulver album and one of the band’s best efforts. It is a gentle and rewarding effort that works its magic over you in a fine fashion. It is one of the more beautiful album you’ll hear and absolutely a highlight of the band’s discography.
