This is a very developed piece of work from their Gothic album into a more refined beast. The band’s brand of melodic doom reaches a peak here that would be hard to ever match. They perform their music in a thoughtful and interesting way. This style would be their own for a long time and it is a very nice album in their discography to emulate. The atmosphere is strong and will hold you over quite well.

This is a very well-written and thoughtful piece that has standout musical performances all around. The guitars are weeping and highly emotional and make for a great element to build the music around. Vocals are commanding and very catchy and will entrance you in their presence. This is a very well performed piece of work that sets the standard in the band’s discography.

If there is a flaw to be found it’s in how the production does not quite hold up to the standards of recent Paradise Lost releases. This is overlooked because the music is so melodic and tuneful that it will hold you over immediately. This is one of the more memorable albums in the band’s catalogue and somewhat of a classic release.

I still did prefer the recent release Tragic Idol to this one. It has a more refined sound to it and fits in nicely with their trajectory. However, as far as classic albums go, it doesn’t get more notable than this release. It is one of the best releases in the band’s discography and one that has a timeless appeal to it.

Rating: 7.9/10
