This band brought what was great about the early Fates Warning albums into a modern environment. This was the first of a couple of albums by the band and set the standard for what this style of music should sound like. It really is a nice modern update to the early works and bring the old sound to new heights.
The musicianship is quite stellar with great guitar work by Matheos and great singing performance by Arch. Add in some solid drumming and this is a nicely structured work of progressive metal might. It could be improved on with more emotional performances, but is still solid.
If there is a flaw to be found it is in how the music does not have the initial appeal of the early Fates Warning work and take a little longer to work itself up. This leads to greater level of satisfaction on the part of the listener. The music ends up being very interesting in its ability to be all over the place and structured at the same time.
All in all, this was a solid and fulfilling work that fills the void for this type of a release. It is very dynamic and features a variety of instrumental passages performed in an classy fashion. Add in a solid production job and this is a complete work that has the ability to mesmerize.
Rating: 7.8/10
