This is a fun album that injected some character into the melodic death metal genre. There is a very sweeping and epic flavor to the work and this makes it enjoyable. Songs like “And the Mirrod Cracked” are very exciting and potent. There is a nice mix of folk feeling like Insomnium with more epic aspects like Edge of Sanity. The next song “Fall” is also very strong and a highlight here.
The musicianship is quite sweeping with really melodic and moving guitars and vocals that are quite expressive. This is very atmospheric music and this is demonstrated through the vibrant musicianship. There is a very memorable aspect to the songs as well and this makes them stick out. The tracks are quite colorful and the title track in particular stands out with great musicianship. There are very few low points to the album as it cruises through its runtime.
The flaw to the music is that is a it less abrasive than something by the likes of At the Gates or Dark Tranquillity. This makes it more suited to folk fans and people that like band like Agalloch, although it still has a good amount of presence. There should be more emphasis put on being crushing, but this is still a welcome change to the usual type of albums heard in this subgenre.
All in all, this was a very nice change to a lot of the music from the genre I am typically littered with and has an ethereal atmosphere that is quite breathtaking to behold. The songs have depth and color and emanate a bright light of promise that is different from other albums seen in the subgenre. There is still room left over for growth and this would be soon on their most recent album, Ayam. All in all, this was a great album for the time and something all fans of melodeath should listen to.
