After the revolutionary How to Measure a Planet?, there were questions surrounding whether the band could match that offering. They were all put to rest when If_Then_Else was released and made a strong contender to that work. The sound is streamlined and more mainstream and certainly something different for the band. Songs like “Shot to Pieces” were very catchy and found their way into your head quite quickly.
This is a very important recording that manages to be a pillar in the band’s discography. The album is nicely produced and the vocal performance of Anneke Van Giersbergen is as strong as ever. The guitars are emotional and catchy at the same time and bolster the whole experience. This is as spotless a recording as you shall find by the band and a highpoint in their lifespan.
The album is still not perfect and suffers from the fact that stronger recordings have been released prior to it. This is not the most dynamic offering of the band and is somewhat one-dimensional sounding. Still, the powerful presence of the guitars and singing makes it a memorable effort in their discography.
In summary, those looking for another strong Anneke Van Giersbergen fronted release will find a lot to like with this recording. It is nicely produced and a fine example of alternative metal at its finest. Though not as compelling as the record that preceded it, this is still an emotional rollercoaster and well worth your time.
