A Sonication is a nice example of the sound created by this outfit. There are many complex segments and technical passages to be found. After a hiatus it is nice for this band to be back on track. There are many fleshed out ideas and thoughtful sequences to be found here, but the band had already peaked with Cosmogenesis. There isn't anything here that will change the listener's mind if they did not like this band in the past.
In terms of musicianship, this is solid stuff. There are technical performances and a really solid production job. People that like the bands other album will be thrilled with the sound of the album. There are lots of flashy songs, but nothing the band hasn't already done before. This is still immaculately performed death metal.
The flaw with the album lies in the lack of progress from previous albums, despite the timing of the album being rather good. There is nothing new here as this is still technical death metal done right and it show a great deal of progressivenesss. There is still the feeling that the outfit can progress in the future because they are only living up to part of their potential.
All in all, this is a very good album and really shows the band's still around and kicking butt. I think Cosmogenesis already show the band peaking, but this is a nice thing to hold you over in the mean time. It is the band's new high water mark and an impressive work. It is eclipsed by Cosmogenesis, but still solid stuff.
