The comfort of olde fashioned Satanic/blasphemous Black Metal is what’s in store now. The great adversarial stance! To take the power away from divine propaganda and to free the spirit through words and acts of defiance. To revel in the existential darkness of the Desolate One. Such has been the Black Metal way since the dawning of Bathory. The spirit is still alive, well and thriving through the work of projects like Angerona whose stance against religion is a violent one. Violent in sound: antagonistic and ruthless. And to what end? The great Unholy War is upon us! But this is no bloody steel against steel battle. This war is a campaign fought on virtual fronts, and the battlefield? The mind. The weaponry? Your intellect. The Prince of the Power of the Air is calling! Angerona has heeded and on February 1, 2025 it released its debut weapon of a record, The Omen Ov Forbidden Prophets via Iron, Blood and Death Corporation.

True Aussie Black Metal… No more, no less. Like “Phoenix Rising” era Deströyer 666, only darker and grimier. Just that gut-wrenching feeling you get when you listen to shit like Profanatica or Archgoat is what to expect. Puts a scowl on your face and hair on your chest. 'Winds Ov Eternal Nightmare' - an abandoned Golgotha - the stench of crucifixion and the aftermath of the suffering of a thousand deaths to feed the Buzzards before the sounding of the blaspheme - desecrating grime of the Impaled Nazarene variety begins to take form: wretched and defiling. No hooks, nothing even pleasing to the ear. Melodic but in a maligned way, as each nausea-inducing passage infects the bloody backdrop. Imagery conjured - rotting flesh upon the Cross - divine carrion ripe for devouring. Angerona visionary and sole instrumentalist, Scorn Wraith, proving to be a master of the visual, as well as someone who possesses a deep understanding of how Satanic Black Metal is supposed to sound.

The titular track? More of the same: bulldozing momentum and maliciously melodic, but with more changes in tempo here and there to spice things up a bit. Chaotically maddening one moment and insidiously mid-tempo’d the next. The following track, 'Voyage Beyond The River Styx', sees Scorn at his compositional apex. Wisely formulated and segmented passages that alternate from brutal to ominous with inertia-inducing shifts. The vocals are one-dimensional… No shrieks, no bellows, just a perpetual growl that rarely varies in tone. Unfortunately, this makes for a somewhat boring experience. The overall tone of the entire record is flat as well. Rarely are there any ascensions or deep dives. A little more in the variation department would’ve definitely served the album well. These faux pas make a modest impact but are most certainly noticeable. 'Flaming Winds Ov Night' is more like it. This highly aggressive yet complex cut delivers a much-needed guitar solo along with more flight and gravity in riffing.

Overall, The Omen Ov Forbidden Prophets is a Black Metal album that is well worth your time, but anything beyond a second listen would be unlikely for me. The spirit of the music is the high point. Such a proper representation of what Satanic Black Metal is all about and the vibe is just right. A strong debut, a solid foundation to build upon and enough to get me excited for a follow-up is The Omen Ov Forbidden Prophets. Something like an infernal Pilsner that will most certainly quench your thirst for all things diabolical, just without much of the heavy buzz I’m looking for. Nicely done and here’s to what appears will be good things out of Angerona
