One of the most prominent characteristics I've always wanted to emphasize in all my reviews is honesty. I always try to be as direct and objective as possible when reviewing any musical work, regardless of its style or message.
In this case, I was given the opportunity to review this split/collaboration between the Russian duo Teufelsdom and the Brazilian project Profanação, who joined forces to create this 27:52-minute work titled Thundering Silence Of Satanic Prayers. This showcases the cavernous and primitive black metal I'd heard on Teufelsdom's previous work (which I also reviewed, by the way).
Honestly, I listened to this split only to see Teufelsdom's musical evolution. I was completely unaware of Profanação's existence, but I gave it a chance, as you never know when you might discover gems in the global underground. Each band composed two songs respectively, the first part being from Profanação. I set out to listen closely to what this project had to say on this split. There were some good moments, with very predictable, prototypical riffs within the realm of black metal. I gave both Profanação songs several listens but couldn't fully connect with their approach. I'm not saying their music is bad; it just didn't click with me, and therefore it went unnoticed.
When I decided to move on to Teufelsdom, I thought I was going to find a sound very similar (if not exactly the same) to the one I heard on their demo "Нечистоты Пылающей Бездны". However, to my pleasant surprise, I found a much more mature and, to a certain extent, more elaborate and refined Teufelsdom than the one I had heard before. With much more dynamic and engaging riffs, better melodies, and quite pleasing progressions, considering the primitive nature of their sound.
The vocals were still as putrid and suffocating as ever, as if a zombie were behind the microphone screaming in fury and suffering. The drums were simple but very effective, providing everything necessary to create a sinister and creeping atmosphere, in addition to providing a fairly solid and stable foundation.
A relatively short but highly enjoyable work, with some great moments from both bands, this album earns a solid 8.5. Especially for the Teufelsdom section, which was the one I enjoyed the most. Recommended for those who enjoy the purest essence of underground metal.
