Upon hearing the intro to Sectarian Defacement's forthcoming LP I was impressed, but had no idea what to expect after the doomy, heavy as balls two minutes. Well, my questions were quickly answered with the first track proper. Abyssal gutturals accompanied by a fiercely downtuned and crunchy guitar attack over some punchy and distinctive drum production lead us into battle with the Ukrainian power trio.
The first thing that jumps out at me concerning the overall sound of the band is the snare drum. This thing is fully cranked with a nice metallic resonance to it that suits the death/grind thing they're going for very well. The kicks are compressed and pack a powerful punch, and drummer Viktor Popovych is no slouch on his double pedal. These songs are true to grindcore in that they are short, but after the first couple of tracks blast your ass, things get kinda weird yet trippy with the haunting electronic ambiance of "Mental Putrefaction". This was an unexpected but welcome interlude, because when embarking upon the journey of listening to a grind record, I generally prepare myself for the unrelenting fury of the musicians.
"Corrosion Spread" resumes the beatdown and Popovych showcases his blast and Slayer beat chops. A couple minutes in and we're treated to a sample of dialogue in Ukrainain before this beefy instrumental resumes with some half time double bass triplets. Sectarian Defacement uses an array of dynamics in their songwriting including jarring tempo and time signature changes. Some lovely pitch-shifted vocals make a couple appearances throughout the run time, and I always enjoy the inclusion of samples and spacey studio tinkerings.
"Puddle Of Gore" marks the second instrumental offering of the record and I must commend the dudes for avoiding what I believe to be one of the major pitfalls of grindcore and that is the tendency of vocalists in the genre to be overly verbose. The instrumentals featured on Hostile Consuming Rapture prove that the musicianship is strong enough to stand on its own. With the segue called "Dismal Liturgy" we get the ol' church bells heard over a rain storm treatment, although with this these sounds become increasingly morbid and distorted. A nice touch. "Famine 33" tests the attention span of grind fans clocking in at 4:30, but the brutality is absolutely unmitigated. This music is hostile and unforgiving, with a feral nature to it that is indicative of the strife this nation has faced since early 2022.
The album closes with a cover of "Suttee" by Defeated Sanity, a technical brutal death band from Germany. The blasting intensity is dialed up a couple notches form this one, and again this is one of the most unique snare drum sounds I have ever encountered. This cover would imply that the Germans are quite formidable, and it features probably the tastiest breakdown to be found here. In researching Defeated Sanity, I was led to the discovery of Decaying Purity, which is part of the TRDM movement. Truly fascinating. Thank you Sectarian Defacement, for broadening my metallic horizons.
