Not long ago, while listening on Spotify, the platform’s algorithm (which I consider quite reliable) introduced me to a band that immediately caught my attention within seconds of hearing one of their songs. The artwork, atmosphere, and overall mood were instantly captivating, prompting me to dig deeper into this Austrian black metal project, Heidnir.
The track in question was 'Der Kosmische Tanz,' the album’s title piece. Not only is the name strikingly poetic, but it is also backed by impressive compositional and musical quality. What consistently draws me in is that distinctly “Germanic” sound often found in bands from Germany and Austria—something I would describe as heroic and epic, yet layered with subtle folk undertones. These melodies tend to linger long after the music stops, making repeated listens almost inevitable. Bands like Horn and Mavorim exemplify this approach perfectly.
The album itself is both varied and cohesive, incorporating a wide range of elements that give each track its own identity. From melancholic choirs and introspective, atmospheric passages to the more aggressive, traditional black metal moments, everything is delivered with a sense of elegance and refinement.
While the record can certainly be enjoyed track by track, it feels most rewarding when experienced as a complete work. This is not background music—it demands attention and invites the listener to engage with its finer details.
Ultimately, this was a fantastic discovery and a project that is now firmly on my radar. I highly recommend it to anyone searching for something fresh and distinctive in a genre often saturated with repetition. Heidnir offers a strong sense of character and individuality.
