Blasphemy epitomizes Black/Death. Warriors of the adversarial path to Satan and brutes of the unfathomable kind. Shat from the womb of Satan's whore in 1987, Blasphemy has been one of the great influencers of their time alongside fellow Black/Death Tyrants, Black Witchery, Acheron and Profanatica. You see, there's a very dark and a very brutal hidden history behind Black Metal in the US and Canada that stories bands that make Gorgoroth and Mayhem sound like Mötley Crüe: Straight for the balls BM, ugly, sinful and dripping with black diabolical depravity. The original bullet-belters and gas-maskers, the OG Goat-fuckers of Black Metal - fucking Blasphemy… While I've got your attention, let's jump headfirst into their filthy debut, "Fallen Angel of Doom…", released in 1990 via Wild Rags Records.

This is the type of shit that you don't even play in front of your friends, unless you're aiming to completely emasculate someone you care about. Their music is cute, yours isn't and it's into the realm of pitch black mystification as the intro, "Winds Of The Black Godz" unfolds to bewildering soundscapes - distant Daemonic chants, grunts and lamentations of being stirred from their Aeons-long bestial slumber as the winds howl in a place that sounds like somewhere between Hell and Earth. And that's it… Nothing but filth, grime and savagery moving forward. "Fallen Angel Of Doom" pops off like sudden projectile vomit following the intro and it blisters, it batters and it bruises: high aggression, low tuning, mammoth riffs and sadistic growls…

Like music to torture-fuck someone on a blood pentagram in a basement… Ravaging innocence and having its dirty little way with you now. "Darkness Prevails" - even heavier than the previous two cuts - militant beats drive forward chopping riffs and wild leads. There's not a whole lot to write about here and sometimes that's a good thing. The tracks just get more brutal and imaginative as the minutes tick. Like a madman who's discovered all new ways in which to inflict pain is Blasphemy. Laying down the grime and the crime. "Ritual" is definitely the most unique track on the record. It kicks off with some unorthodox rhythms that precursor "To Mega Therion"-like, ominous atmospherics and Mortician-level grooves/grinds. You can't teach this shit. This is the product of a genuine hatred for Christianity and a genuine passion for true Black/Death Metal.

And just like that, you've been baptized in the blood of the Goat. All of your innocence stripped away as warm crimson cascades down your ugly face. Baphomet as your Baptist and overseen by Satan himself on this night of unholy desecration. Something surely more dangerous than even the most Satanic Black Metal. While they burned churches, Blasphemy raped nuns… Where they released dry, soulless records, Blasphemy embraced a more saturated and textured sound. Not refined by any sense of the word, but robust in comparison to albums like "Dark Medieval Times". Just a different beast, something not to be fucked with. Hail Satan! Hail Blasphemy…
