Virginia is for Lovers… of true Thrash fucking Metal! From out of Richmond, Virginia, USA emerges Vigil - Warmongers! Nocturnal Breeders, Diabolical Overseers and driven by nothing more and certainly nothing less than the foundational spirit of the Genre that its Progenitors instilled in all of our asses oh so many years ago with a crude drawing of a knife protruding from a toilet. And so it continues - the manifestation of Thrash Metal as it was meant to be. Kreator? Testament? Exodus? Can you even call any of this outlandish shit Thrash anymore? The answer is no. The proof is right here in this gem of a record, "Primordial Rites", that's about to be unshackled on October 30 via Shadow Kingdom Records.
A primordial shot of pure electric Thrash straight to the dick! From start to finish, "Primordial Rites" is an exercise in muscular American, Hot Rod, Super Sized Genre representation and a five piece on top of it? A full lineup and they haven't tried to kill each other yet, they've just utilized the personnel to the max. A full-bodied harmonious experience where all phases play an equally vital part, all the while as every member of the band exudes his/her own brand of unique swagger. The final product is something that one could easily mistake for this band's umpteenth album, but alas! It's a debut: a statement-making, look Mom no hands, hold my beer fucking debut…
It's called Thrash for a reason and it's not because you're going to sit there and play with your balls… This shit is pure, organic, youthful energy that cannot be emulated, only experienced for a precious handful of years before one realizes just how miserable life can get. The salad days, their prime! Vigil are in the thick of it and the energy is perpetual, it is steady like a blowjob and it is every bit as satisfying… The onset of it all is brought to you by the opening track, "Nocturnal Hunger", as it pumps out violent rhythms and rips out voracious riffs. Fuck setting the mood, these fuckers are setting fires, immolating what's decent, ravaging what was left of your innocence. And it just keeps going! Solos doing the talking during the track's final moments until a Thrashed out breakdown ensues.
Production quality is powerful yet grimy and suitably stripped-down. Still loud, still overpowering, just not sanitized. Every second of runtime is like a reminder of Paul Baloff's tank-top. The following track, "Seventh Circle" - like power, inexplicable power trying to escape a vacuum on the Event Horizon of a Black Hole and being contained by nothing more than series upon series of driving cadences: galloping, jackhammering and pounding you into a state of wondering why you're getting pummeled by the bass now… Thrash Metal for blunt force trauma and ER adventures, smoldering buildings and old fashioned bloodlust. Another band out of Richmond, Municipal Waste - turn-of-the-century Thrash icons! Their work paling in comparison to what I'm experiencing here. Not some low-brow '80's Thrash parody… Just real Thrash Metal done the eager way, the passionate way, the deadly way.
"Tortured For Christ"! Blasphemy at work and raising Hell from out of their bong water-stained carpet is Vigil. A Hellish guitar-fingering good time. A textbook Thrash cut devoid of pretentiousness or gaud. Just bang your head and try not to think too hard. You don't have to and that's the beauty of albums like "Primordial Rites". It carries you along and all you can do is go along for the ride. Closing with "Abhorrence" and ringing in the final moments with nothing unexpected, only what we've been getting hate-fucked to this entire time: attitude, skill and understanding. Understanding of what we are really looking for in today's Thrash game. Just give it to us violent and genuine. The spirit is alive! And kicking with Vigil - the Outfit to keep your ears locked onto. Now run along, ya silly cunt! Because it's time to feel like a teenager again, just without all the masturbation…
