Förstörelse - Interview

Quick Q and A with Belarusian band Förstörelse about their origins, ideas and thoughts on the music and its purpose, originally for the Cemetery Sound magazine "Voice from the Grave".

Samaroth

Hello, why did you choosed such name for the band? What does it mean?

M: Förstörelse is a Swedish word that translates as "destruction". We thought about the name of the band for a long time and went through various options, among which were Infernal Fog, mögel, helvete, but in the end we came to this one, because it conveys the message of the band, its basis, in the best possible way. We created this band to bring darkness, chaos and destruction!

Who is your music inspirator?

M: I think each member will have their own list. Actually, initially we were based on the Norwegian scene of the nineties, then the sources of inspiration were Mayhem, Morbid, burzum, darkthrone, satyricon and band like them. But then we expanded this spectrum a little, took something from watain, carpathian forest, dissection, emperor, to some extent, we were even inspired by such bands as finntroll and amorphis and all this is only a small part, in fact, there are a great variety of sources of inspiration, so you can't list them all at once.

Do you think that the Norwegian "Black circle" and the old scene were the standard of black metal or that the genre need to taste some fresh blood?

M: I think I don't have a single opinion on this. Definitely the first bands were very good, but one way or another the scene has to evolve. Nowadays black metal has many subgenres and in some ways it's good, but on the other hand some of them are not worth paying attention to in my opinion. With the advent of social media, many artists have the opportunity to share their music, their vision, but this has also led to the emergence of a bunch of identical and simply lousy bands, but if you look deeper, among all this you can find real works of art that we might never have known about.

Majority of your texts are in English, but there are also works in Swedish. Why do you use several languages?

M: For me, Swedish is the most sincere language, my black heart speaks in it, so sometimes I use it. But we mainly give preference to English, as the language that is understood by the largest number of people, to convey our ideas to different audiences.

Do you think the sound of your project is already formed or will it change over time?

M: I think we have a certain established style that we stick to and we couldn't get away from it even if we wanted to. But we are always open to experimentation and we try something new in every album.

Your previous album evokes dark themes of horrible monsters and gloomy places, and the songs tell about something mystical? What is the idea behind the album, what is the meaning behind it?

M: We believe that although the author's vision is certainly important, the listeners themselves decide how to understand our music and even if you just respond to this whole dark atmosphere, this also has a place to be. Any interpretation is correct. Let my colleague answer this answer, he was the main ideological inspirer of the previous album.

V: This album tells the dark story of the kingdom of darkness called "Ksilatum" each track is a reflection of the events that happen after the gates are opened. However, this is not just a mystical story. I put my dark nature into this album, and the vocalist as well, there are songs telling about our dark philosophy, and even in the lyrics about terrible monsters from the deapth, something personal is put in.

How do you write music? Does it happen spontaneously or is it a conscious, systematic process?

M: It's always different. Sometimes you wake up with the idea that you need to write a song, you don't know what it's about yet, but you feel an urgent need, then you just sit down and start writing, and sometimes you're just walking or sitting somewhere and lines and rhythms spontaneously creep into your head. Then you stop in the middle of the street and start frantically writing down what you've come up with.

What can we expect from your new albums?

M: Actually, anything, we have a lot of interesting ideas and they all need to be implemented.

Any final words?

M:Noli me tangere!

V: Deny your humanity!
