MB Premiere and Review: SVARTTJERN - 'Melodies of Lust'

Out of Norway's grim black metal pits climbs SVARTTJERN with their latest insolence titled "Shame is Just a Word". Sharing members of Carpathian Forest, Svarttjern combine blood stained fists to clobber the feeble and unworthy. Their smack dab and sincere approach to the sub genre has earned them some renown thus casting them aside from the obloquy of mediocre black metal bands.
Now under Soulseller Records comes 8 tracks drenched in the pride of late 1st wave black metal. If you're looking to roll in the trenches of opprobrium, take a dive in SVARTTJERN's pool with 'Melodies of Lust' before it opens to the public January 17th, 2020 via Soulseller Records.

Being able to appropriately mix thrash metal and heavy metal with black metal is one of the formulas responsible for Svarttjern's success; 'Prince of Disgust', 'Bonded by Blood' and 'Shame is Just a Word' key-in on what makes the album (by what I would consider a veteran band given the members involvement with Carpathian Forest and Ragnarok) so fun to listen to. The vocals are excellent, the riffs especially on 'Melodies of Lust' and 'Frost Embalmed Abyss' are phenomenal; the drumming gives you that early thrash metal feel of fury on instances, while the production helps out through its clarity.
Just a handful of bands could reach such a defining point in their musical journey and still remain relevant in a scene that consists of exorbitant amounts of banality, some of which need to hide behind edgy theatrics to even get a glance in their direction, thanks to the saturated mess of a genre. However, Svarttjern are a dependable breed far from the leeching hordes carrying the tag of self-proclamation, a reoccurring thing I see now.

MAYHEM reveal first official music video 'Falsified And Hated'

Norwegian black metallers MAYHEM released first official music video for 'Falsified And Hated', from their latest album "Daemon", out on October 25th, 2019 via Century Media Records.
"This is the first official music video we have released, so indeed some thought went into this," explains Teloch. "Instead of having us filmed at some dodgy location with instruments not even plugged in, we did something different, in the true tradition of the band. We hired Johan Bååth (Watain, Lucifer, etc.) to direct the video and we also were lucky enough to get the infamous Swedish graffiti artist Ziggy Jonas Rasmusson to do his ritualistic paintings for the video."
"When I was asked to do the very first Mayhem music video, I thought I really had to do something more than just a plain Black Metal video, I wanted to take it one step further and do something different but stay true to the genre and of course Mayhem’s iconic legacy as a band," says Director Johan Bååth. "I thought of the artist Ziggy Jonas Rasmusson and his ritualistic paintings and I asked him if he wanted to participate. Together we came up with this idea of a ritualistic painted pentagon-shaped room, completely surrounded by five painted walls, facing a centered pentagram-painting with Ziggy´s "hex-text" signs and symbols all over, each of the five point corners symbolizing human expiration.
In the middle we see an organic neoplasm tumor-like shaped form, all muddy and dirty with wooden branches ensnared around it. The surreal and scary-looking outgrowth is almost breathing with dark energy, attached to several plastic tubes connected to five cloaked characters symbolizing the five members of Mayhem. They´re completely occupied with different ritual tasks destroying all humanity and contributing matter and dark energy to the demon creation in the middle."
MAYHEM prepares for a North American tour in support of the album, co-headlining the Decibel Magazine Tour with Abbath. Tickets are available tomorrow, Nov. 8, at 10 am and can be purchased at decibelmagazine.com/tour.
